This work examines the identities of the builders of ancient earthworks in North America. It presents evidence and arguments asserting that the mounds were constructed by the ancestors of indigenous peoples, thereby disputing prevalent nineteenth-century theories that attributed them to a different, non-Native race. It contributes to early archaeological efforts to understand North American prehistory.
